What is a non-woven mask?
A non-woven surgical mask is a mask that protects the wearers respiratory tract. Non-woven masks filters inhaled air, minimizing the risk of spreading viruses and bacteria. The disposable surgical face mask covers a large portion of the face and protects the wearer from dust and microorganisms. These facemasks are essential for doctors and hospital staff as it protects them from viruses which may spread from patients.
Food industry workers also use non-woven face masks to prevent human contamination and the transmission of viruses through food. Non-woven facemasks are better than woven face masks because they have better air permeability, lightweight, waterproof, flexible, durable and provides better filtration.
Usage of non-woven facemasks minimizes the risk of contamination as compared to reusable products, disposable products are disposed of after usage.
Overall, the usage of facemasks, gloves, social distancing, hand washing and other protective measures when you do not need to be in public are all effective ways to flatten the curve and prevent exposure to bacteria and viruses.
What do the differences in ply mean?
1 ply or single ply masks involve only a single layer of microfibers without any folding. The 2 or double ply mask consists of two layers of spun bonded thermal polypropylene microfibers which provides better filtration and absorption. The 3 ply mask or triple ply mask has three layers of folding arranged vertically which covers the mouth, nose and chin.
In practical applications, for hospital use and dental use, facemasks require mandatory utilization of non-woven face masks as the mask ensures the prevention of virus transmission.
What is a Level 2 mask? What are ATSM levels?
Surgical masks are tested by ATSM, which test products to improve quality and safety. They have more than 12,500 international standards across a wide variety of services and industries, including barrier protection standards for medical masks. There are there are levels of ATSM barrier protection:
Level 1: Low barrier protection for general use for low risk, nonsurgical procedures and exams that do not involve sprays, aerosols and fluids. An ear loop mask is a level 1 mask. ATSM level 1 masks are the general standard for both surgical and procedural use.
Level 2: Moderate barrier protection for low to moderate levels of aerosols, sprays and fluids.
Level 3: Maximum barrier protection for any situation that has the potential for exposure to heavy levels of aerosols, sprays and fluids. CovCare recommends this level as a best practice for supporting or safety initiatives.
